Listen from above and below the engine as this will help determine where to start looking for the cause of the noise. An engine depends on clean oil to lubricate the internal moving parts. When the oil level is low or dirty it can cause the lifter to malfunction which will allow excess valve train clearance creating a tapping or clicking noise.
For example: A valve lifter is responsible for holding valve train clearance to a minimum. In extreme cases it can cause one of the many bearing surfaces to fail causing permanent engine damage. The camshaft phaser can cause the noise you describe and also the drivablity issues. I would certainly fix it. There is a cam phaser lockout kit available and I would recommend using the kit instead of replacing the phaser.

Thanks in advance! Kind of not wanting to view that. This is going to sound a bit weird, but I would check for a small exhaust leak on that side. Look for spots that are black in color underneath. Possibly needs an exhaust manifold and buy a new exhaust manifold. Worst part is getting the broken pieces of the studs out of the head. Sometimes using a left hand drill bit will get them out.
Last one of these I got lucky,my twist sockets save me time getting out these studs out of the head without cutting them off. Verify that the noise is heard in the exhaust system in the wheel well or catalytic converter area, from underneath the vehicle. Or is the noise in the cat not enough to cause a failure? Just trying to understand how that works.
